someone made a retort to this about how it's bullshit -- the mesh is just being subdivided without adding any extra detail and a real mesh (look at sculpted meshes in zbrush; some of them have a BILLION polygons) with that kind of polycount would have considerably more detail
yeah i knew it was bullshit but it's a decent demonstration of the basic concept

mega!!!! wrote:i don't see another na video game crash really being needed. besides, that was more towards the low quality of the games rather than what the actual problem is now. it's the fucking $250 million game budgets that need to sell millions of said game just to break even. many major publishers who publish "aaa massive budget gaymz" are definitely gonna fall apart this gen on their own anyway, and probably many of the development teams owned by said major publishers will get sold off to smaller ones that can actually not have overblown fucking budgets assigned to games and still publish a decent one. at least i could hope that.
dude, that's the problem. to compete with the first party and third party blockbusters they have to have graphics as good and the cost of devment multiplies by like 8 by every gen (ok yeah inflation but inflation is definitely not *8 per 6 years)

i blame this shit on the xbox 360 being announced so early and with those crazy specs, every dev had to live up to what ms was putting out (halo graphics were brettygod) so they didn't look like asshats. ps3 had to one-up them and it only got worse, all of sony's exclusives had fucking breathtaking graphics because of their direct competition with microsoft and the fact they had to sell their system as having good graphics. the moeshit developers and nintendo were like "lol fuck u niggers imma do my own shit y'all on the path straight ta hell" and quit giving a shit about graphics, why do you think the wii got so many japanese games? because nobody wanted to have to compete with "western graphics hd: subtitle 3" and "this game costed seventeen million of taxpayer money to produce" so they went with the wii where dev costs were low and they had an excuse for comparatively shit graphics. when the other two consoles sorted their shit out this stopped happening but it was a big thing up until around 2009 doctorate of quality

meanwhile with this graphics war going on between the major franchise selling xbox and the only people actually developing exclusively for the ps3, devs had a choice; go big on graphics and budget or go the fuck home with no money. only the biggest companies survived and one flop sunk whole companies (LE COUGHY COUGHY BOMBERMAN ACT ZERO COUGHY COUGHY HUDSON SOFT MAYMAY), it was basically microsoft and sony accidentally on purpose ending the golden age of third parties being on top. fuck, the only third companies making games that sell massively are ea, ubi, squeen, activision and almost sega. THERE'S ONLY 8 PLAYERS IN THIS FUCKING INDUSTRY OF COURSE ONE OF THEM IS GOING TO FUCK UP AND A CRASH WILL HAPPEN

i love how devs and manus are constantly fucking things up for each other, thank god the closest thing that happens on pc to this is amd having shit support

also on what ammy said about atari being a small company, they had flop after flop and made it through because their budgets were proportionate to how much they had pretty directly to what we have now

Maybe that Steam console which I know nothing about can revive the console tradition. Not that it's pertinent to me. Haven't bought a console in years.
Honestly, it's just Nintendo struggling this gen. They made a bet on another weak console with a gimmick to set it apart from the competition, thinking they could ride out another Wii success. Unfortunately, the Wii U didn't catch on for multiple reasons:

- It's really underpowered, comparable only to the last-gen consoles.
- The tablet controller didn't catch on with gamers as much as Nintendo hoped it would.
- Even looking at the controls from a non-tablet perspective, gamers are simply tired of motion games.
- Third-party developers aren't flocking to it, last I checked they had less third-party support than the Wii.
- They STILL don't know how to do online gaming. Ditch the friend code system and adopt something more similar to the competition.
- And most damning of all, there are still a lot of people who don't realize the Wii U is a separate console rather than a tablet accessory.

The PS4 and Xbox One are among the fastest-selling consoles of all time, and both are breaking sales records. Sony and Microsoft are doing just fine.

As for the Steam Box, I don't think it's going to go down as well as you'd expect. I believe I made a post a few pages back... they're simply releasing too many different models, the cheapest starting at $500 and the most expensive going as high as $6000. It's going to confuse consumers, PC aficionados are going to recognize it for what it really is (a prebuilt PC in a different box), and it will have the same problem that turns console gamers away from pc gaming™ in the first place: With so many different Steam Boxes running with different specs, either the cheapest Steam Boxes won't be able to play everything (or worst case scenario, most things) released for it, or EVERY Steam Box will run everything, making the more expensive ones a literal waste of money.
Iwata didn't mean developing games for smartphones, he meant making hardware centered around Android and companion apps.

Also, companies were developing for PC and PS360 during the last half of last gen, and they had two separate architectures. It was also x86 and POWERPC, now it's x86 and POWER proper, so they have the tools to make games compatible with both. Just look at Apple's transition from POWERPC to x86, a whole slew of apps were compatible with both.

It's not actually that underpowered, devs have confirmed that it's more powerful than the IGN "leak" that everyone says is black and white fact and this is evident if you compare the Wii U's best graphics to the PS4's best graphics.

The tablet controller.. sigh. Nintendo wanted to kill two birds with one stone by promoting the whole "companion app" thing while also letting it function as a legitimate controller. I haven't seen a single game, though, that requires you to use both in a succession that doesn't feel like you could just hit pause, pick up your phone and do whatever and jumping back in. Maybe Nintendo thought that SmartGlass and the Vita/PS app didn't get enough exposure, or that they weren't desirable because the screens weren't made by the same company, or that not everyone had those things and a companion screen should be included with the device. You know what? THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN GOOGLE TO TAKE CARE OF THAT WITH A NEXUS! Nintendo and Google are total butt-buddies and they keep forgetting about each other! [s]It's hard to ship two companies that admit they like each other to each other but won't do anything together or acknowledge the relationship![/s]

Alternatively, maybe it wasn't about the interest in companion apps and more about "Doy, casual peeple liek da aypad so wee make aypad!!!!!" In that case, clap-fucking-clap-motherfucking-clap, Nintendo. EVERYBODY THAT WANTS TO GAME ON A TABLET ALREADY HAS A FUCKING TABLET.

Nintendo has been downplaying the Wii Remote to a "oh yeah if you have Wii Remotes lying around from our last console you can use them on this one if you really want" status. I can't even name a game that uses its motion controls, then again I don't have one.

Actually, they are. Just not the Squeenixes and EAs and Activisions of the world that make the blockbuster games. But the eShop? Holy fucking SHITBALLS!

Um, they already did. Nintendo Network was a complete overhaul of the system, so much so that they shut down the old friend code system and people were upset that they couldn't play MK Wii and SSB online any more.

I highly, highly doubt that. The only place I still hear about that is Sonyafroamerican threads on /v/ and when I lurk on Neo[G/F]A[F/G]. They spent a lot of money this holidays debunking that theory.

Honestly though, how did this even happen? Hardcore gamers knew better than to say that and casuals wouldn't be paying attention to E3.

Sony and Xbox are not doing just fine. The electronics division will no longer exist for Round 9, and with no electronics division SCEI are basically sitting ducks. Even then, SCEI is going to be spun off or go multiplat or opt for a cloud platform or I don't know, but there will be no PS5, because even if SCEI is allowed by Sony Media to get a third party manufacturer they'll be spun off because Sony Media will be hardware-manufacturing-o-phobic. In short, if PS5 comes out, I owe various people $500.

Xbox is doing SHIT! It's underselling the PS4 and was being outsold by the Wii U week by week DESPITE the good launch library, decent system and an advertisement campaign several times larger than the one that gave Windows 95 its monopoly. What the fuck happened? Pre-release, nobody wants Kinect, price, and people being burned by the Xbox 360's rather crappy lifespan.

And Steam Machines are going nowhere fast. The best looking one is the $500 one. And it's.. $500. With compatibility issues due to it being low end. See, the thing is, the things are fucking useless, they're compact HTPCs with a brand name.

just part of the whole model since zbrush cant allocate render shade and light 1 billion polygons at once and not be slow as shit

i don't think THIS is 1 billion but it was to show off how zbrush supports up to 1 billion polygons on a sculpted mesh the point is that 6k ain't shit if you're not talking about video games (and even video game models are textured with maps generated from models with millions of polygons)
