his sons were war heroes in world war i and he himself got shot in the chest by a would-be assassin but his notes and glasses and chest muscle softened the impact so he kept speaking and told the crowd "it takes more than that to kill a bull moose" (his new political party after the republicans didn't nominate him again)

also the guy was the person who started the green revolution in the 60s which was important for preventing our linear agricultural food production growth from falling behind our exponential population growth which would have caused billions to have starved to death
