The funny thing is for almost all of lost year, the gaming industry and dev industry was touting the rise of indie games and how it is a good thing. Telling people to get their feet wet and just try making a game and learn some programming in the process. You know C objective or any language you can learn. The open App market was considered to be the great equalizer, good ideas will take off while bad ideas will just fade away.

Then Flappy Bird came out, a very simple game that spiked in popularity. But the gaming industry didn't like it because it wasn't "artistic" or "new age" like Journey or Brothers. Site after site rushed in to make their oh so "clever" reviews and passed judgement on a very simple piece of software. Even fringe sites such as Tested took its time to do a drive by pisser on the game.

But if you think about it, Dong made the game very friendly. Sure there are ads, but the game is also free. The game also doesn't have any "pay to win" or "pay to play" functions, so this was easier for parents who might have their card linked and unsecured on their iOS devices. It was a simple game with a simple mission that could be used to help pass the few passing minutes you had waiting for the bus or sitting in the car.

Pretty sad to see that a guy received such a huge amount of negative connotations by people who wanted to make themselves relevant and show that they were "hip" and "trendy" by nonchalantly parading around spewing their snarky comments and not seeing the game for what it was. Instead they had to take a few minutes out of their day to say that they didn't care for the game.

This guy literally was the opposite of what we hated in mobile games, easy to play, fun, etc. He made it accessible by making it free, and didn't use any pay walls or money mining strategies. Once people saw how much money he was making, people just despised him. Pretty sad really, but I hope this doesn't turn him off on working on the medium he loves. I don't even play the game, but I can at least take the time to appreciate the game for what it is.

I had dreamed of making indie games for a large part of my life, but it's something I wouldn't even consider nowadays. The gaming community is filled with whiny, irrationally angry, entitled shitheads.

I know for a fact that I wouldn't be able to deal with the level of hate these people receive for the crime of trying at something, even when they give it away for free.

There are incredibly huge numbers of people out there actually do wish violence or even death upon anyone with the nerve to release something that doesn't meet their personal standards of excellence.

Fuck that. Life to too short, the gaming community is just not worth dealing with. I'll stick to making software for rational adults.
