both next to pokemon are the worst offenders of same damn game syndrome
mario uses a new gimmick with every release and uses the old mario/sm64 forumla every time but not reaching the levels of greatness of SMB/SMBW/SM64 whatsoever, same applies to sonic by the way
maybe super mario galaxy is an exception but whatever

how to make a mario game:
step 1: plot
bowser kidnaps peach. mario rescues peach.
step 2: gimmick
select a gimmick including adding new power-ups, SPACE and... that's all there is to it
there is no step 3 about being original
same for sanic except sanic's plot is "eggman is being evil again go kill him or something"

sonic and mario are good franchises. mario galaxy was awesome. i love sonic generations, all stars racing, colors and unleashed was crappy but had a good soundtrack
