yeah but if windows is corrupted what the hell do I do

I mean I guess I could hook two drives up to one computer but I'd need two windows drives which means no boot disc and all our computers are laptops

Simple;

1. Create a persistent LiveUSB system.
2. Put in your "broken" hard drive
3. Boot the LiveUSB, use recovery tools for /dev/sda. If you don't have any then just apt-get/yum/zypper/emerge/equo them (ddrescue should do you fine)
