java is a language thats easy to learn and some of the practices will transfer over into modern programming languages - learning it can help you learn whatever you want as long as the language is c-like and is object oriented

can you go into specifics about this? i brought up how java is insecure with my dad and he said it's just the runtime environment or something

he works with java for server stuff and he says it is indeed very secure. but thats different stuff if i understand correctly

Yes, the virtual machine that 99% of Java software runs in is where the security issues start to come up.

There's alternatives like OpenJRE or IcedTea or whatever the fuck but they're pretty terrible. Most people run the proprietary Oracle one.

I have a pretty limited idea of how Java works (cuz its shit) but it goes something like this

Java programs run inside of a virtual machine that interprets shit and then makes the computer do things with the software. This is so that you don't have to port your program to a whole bunch of OSes, one write works on all of them (that have the VM, that is)

The problem is the VM is super easy to exploit and make it do nefarious things with your computer. Because it is shit. And its entire design philosophy is shit.

yup! everything is compiled to and runs on the extraordinarily shitty, memory-loving jvm - the idea was to make a language that could be used on any computer but ideally would run on a server with tons of memory instead of tons of processing power
