yes it does borrow from taoism but it's not identical

by non-religious they mean "visit the shrine every now and then with the shrine rituals, and the whole shinto birth/christian marriage/buddhist funeral conundrum but don't actively worship anything" i fumbled on the "buddhist gods are worshipped" it's more of a "you are not prohibited from worshipping them" unlike regular buddhism

and since it's relevant to the topic; regular shinto is dead, it splintered into "non-religious" as defined above and those crazy ass sects. and religion in japan sure is hella dynamic, you could probably convert 100% population to scientology with a few tv ads
