oldie but a goodie
can someone answer me nowsparky wrote:a web browser is not for downloading large files, it's for downloading and interpreting HTML. look at all the options in protocols we have at the moment dedicated to just downloading large files:
FTP
SFTP
SCP
TFTP
bittorrent
SMB
can someone please explain to me why HTTP would even have methods to handle large files? THAT IS NOT WHAT HTTP IS FOR. DO YOU WANT TO DO DNS LOOKUPS OVER HTTP? DO YOU WANT TO SEND ARP QUERIES OVER HTTP? we have protocols and applications that are, get this, actually designed for transferring files. if anything, we need a file download protocol designed for internet use that implements the useful features from bittorrent (pieces, hash checking, resuming an interrupted download). i can't understand why people want to use HTTP for literally everything on the internet. if you absolutely have to use HTTP to download a file, use something like wget.
fuck.

i had this paragraph written out but it boils down to thata wrote:lol whatever dude no need to be an assholespinnythings wrote:nobody cares
by that i mean most users dont give a crap about torrents. they want an easy way to download files of any size and dont care if it can be done more efficiently. my mom has no idea what a torrent even is. i dont even know how to set up a torrent.

i listed a lot more than bittorrent my man. FTP is easy, every major browser supports it and you can even view networked trees with explorer.exespinnythings wrote:i had this paragraph written out but it boils down to thata wrote:lol whatever dude no need to be an assholespinnythings wrote:nobody cares

also in-browser torrent clients are very common nowadays

Re: oldie but a goodie
saying 'torrents aren't easy to work with' is a shit example because in an alternate world where http didn't catch on at all, a select few argue in favor of developing with and using http for file transfer even though it requires special clients/modifications to download

i don't see why every site puts up DDLs for ISOs, music, movies etc. with http. downloading something through FTP is as easy as it is HTTP

File Transfer Protocol. you've probably used it before and not realized it, i know all of firefox's DDLs are trasnferred through their FTP server. more features, less server strain, more ease of use for developers etcspinnythings wrote:whats ftpa wrote:i listed a lot more than bittorrent my man. most people don't understand bittorrent, though. i'll give you that
it's got some seriously terrible PR since 99% of the time its used for piracy even though its completely apt for legal filesharing

explorer has so many features it's crazy and yet most people don't know about them. i stay off windows' dick but it's a good premisea wrote:i listed a lot more than bittorrent my man. you can browse FTP file trees if you put an address into the location bar, like
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/

Re: oldie but a goodie
yeah you can do that with asp.net website drives and shit to attach it as a network drive if you own the server
on unsecured aspx servers there used to be a very serious security vulnerability where you could connect to and access the entire server from explorer by adding it as a network drive because microshit didn't give iss a password by default
