If you're on a grant or VTOS then if you miss too many days then the government won't pay you.
Miss three days in a month means you won't get your grant payment that month for example.

I'm not on a grant or VTOS, I'm on Back To Education Allowance. My attendance doesn't affect that payment.

Other than that, you don't have to attend class in the sense that the lecturers aren't going to come after you or report to anyone about it. If you miss a lot of days then they can kick you out of the course but that's in extreme cases.
