Re: story thread
I grew up on a ranch out in the country so I'm not stranger even to the bigger citters crawling around. Heck we use to feed grasshoppers to banana spiders for fun when I was growing up. One day dad decides he hates me and wants me to clean out the old shed at the back of our property that hasn't been touched in years. (The shed was about 8x8ft) I gear up head to toe because I know this is going to get ugly. This was my weird military phase in middle school where I wore all camo and called everyone "Charlie" so I walked out there with a bucket full of insect repellants, a blow torch, and a 4 foot dowel rod. I stuffed the cans in my pockets, strapped on my paintball mask, equipt the rod and torch and prepared for battle. My strategy was to stand on the bucket in the middle of the shed and just to repel any attacks by air or land. The bees were easy enough. The only exposed skin I had was my ankles so they didn't pose much threat. I drag out a furry carcass (looked like a skunk) and began to pull out all the old shovels and shit that never got used. As I grab this board that is leaning against the wall I know I need to check the other side because evil is always lurking just around the corner. As I do, I saw every square inch of that 2x8 board was covered with wolf spiders. Immediatly they all dropped to the ground and scattered with a few coming right at me. Fucking huge country wolf spiders the biggest one I swear to god was the size of my out stretched hand were surrounding me and cutting off my exit. I stupidly jumped off my bucket to run for my life. As my feet hit the ground I felt the crunch of them underneath me. One crawled on my ankle and started to get up into my pant leg. That feeling of those huge hairy spiders legs on my calf still sends shivers up my spine. I ran back into the house with no pants on screaming about how charlie was in my pants and how he would pay with his life and the lives of his children. Everyone one of those fuckers laid dead by the end of the day.

- im not responsible for whatever happens to you beyond this point:
- “Heave!” shouted the man from behind the wall. A grinding noise could be heard, as stone rolled over stone, and light began to pour into the cavern as ancient stale air rushed out. A skinny, sweaty brunette in cargo pants and a tanktop stepped into the large musty chamber filled with artifacts older than history itself, and let a gasp escape her lungs. “This is more incredible than I ever could have imagined!” she exclaimed, as she darted from object to object in fascination.
A tall man with dark hair, a bandana tied over his head and a chiseled chin followed her in, along with a group of natives. “Doctor Rosford, stop before you damage something from your darting about. You're like a small child in a department store.”
“Hans, this is the largest artifact collection I have ever seen! These artifacts could date to the early dynastic period, maybe even before!” She was still giddily bouncing around, sometimes pausing to pick up an object here or there, or taking a closer look at a statue or strange device.
She bent over and examined one strange, deep blue box with intricate carvings, about six feet tall, and she noticed a glow coming from within. Out of the knapsack she carried on her back she pulled an instrument which she held up to the box, but the instrument’s LED panel showed a large 0, signaling that it detected nothing.
“Well, this is odd,” she stated, scratching her head, “this thing is glowing but the meter shows no radiation. I’m going in for a closer look. Here,” She handed Hans the detector, “If anything happens, pull me back. We don’t want a repeat of what happened at Dig Site 197.”
There was a hole on the appliance-sized box in the shape of a rectangle from which the light was mostly emanating, and Hannah put her eyes up to it. It seemed right, the edges of the rectangular hole were soft and there was an indentation for her nose.
She stared into the light for a minute, but nothing was happening. But as she started to retract her head from the opening the box grabbed her and held her head against the hole with claws made out of some of the carvings. She began squirming about in the grasp of the metal hands, but before she could get herself loose the light inside the box began to flash in a spectrum of colors, and her eyes dilated at the sight. She lost control of her body and could only stare at the light, unaware of the shouting coming from outside the box. Events, memories, emotions, thoughts, and even ideas flowed into her mind at a rate that her brain barely had time to process. It all happened in the course of a few seconds, but when it was done she collapsed to the ground, a slight headache growing in her head, and her blurry sight faded out.
When she came to, a blurry, gigantic silhouette towered over her, blocking out the rays of the glaring sun from her eyes. Her eyes focused and saw Hans, reaching down with his hand to help her up. “Hey, guys, she's awake!” A group of other archaeologists rushed over and began asking her questions, like what she saw, what she felt, if she had broken any bones and if she was hungry. She said she was fine and wanted to continue with the dig, but the other archaeologists said they had arranged her a flight home and would finish the excavation for her. After much convincing, she reluctantly agreed to go under the assumption of possible mental damage, climbed into a waiting jeep and rode off to the nearby dirt-strip airport.
Flash forward, two months later.
Hannah stood off to the side of a new exhibit in the most prominent museum in the country. A large decorative tarp covering a 24-foot tall stone ring stood in the center, the ring having similar intricate carvings as the ones on the box which had grabbed the Doctor's face. The said box sat nearby, no longer glowing. Whatever it did to Hannah had apparently been a one-time thing.
She shuffled her note cards idly, waiting for the exhibition to begin. Despite her accident, she had been present for most of the work done previous, and she had found the tomb with the stone ring and the box, after all, so she had been chosen to give the speech regarding the work that had been done.
The museum's president wrapped up his speech and looked over to Hannah. “And now, ladies and gentlemen, the woman who started it all- Doctor Hannah Rosford!”
Applause erupted as Hannah stepped into the spotlight's glow, emanating from the second story balcony above. Her deep purple plain dress glowed a little in the light, but she didn't notice, more focused on her mental notes of how to go about her speech.
She stepped up to the podium and began. “Thank you, thank you. You know, none of this would have been possible without the help of the dig team, give those guys a hand too!” She waved her hand out at the dozen or so other archaeologists sitting in the front row, and the spotlight followed her gesture to include them all in its glow. As they stood up and waved, Hannah took the precious few extra seconds in the temporary darkness to organize her note cards on the podium and wiped the sweat off of her brow. She wasn't used to giving speeches and although she usually managed to pull them off, she was always afraid she would screw something up and look like an idiot in front of hundreds of people. She thought back to her previous successful speeches to try to comfort her concerns but her emotions did not change, and then the spotlight was back on her.
She continued, lining out the story of how her team acted upon a hunch from the university their team had started at three years ago. She explained the difficulty of getting permission to run the dig from the Egyptian government, the days trudging through the desert on camel-back, the friendly help of the locals after some strange mistranslations, and the eventual discovery of the tomb where the objects in the display behind her had been found. She hadn't spoken with this many words at once in over a year.
Walking over to a previously mounted rope hanging down from above, she grabbed hold of it and stated in a lively voice, “And now, without further ado, I present to you... the Mysteries of the Ancient Aegyptus exhibit!”
She pulled on the rope and the decorative tarp covering the large stone ring fell to the floor, and the display lights over the exhibit flared to life in a dramatic reveal. The audience let out a gasp at the sight of the massive circular artifact, and began to applaud. Hannah let out a sigh of relief as the spotlight on her died out and she stepped away from the podium. The audience spread out around the exhibit and she mingled into the crowd, and quickly found her friend Shelby as the lights came on overhead.
Shelby saw Hannah coming. “Hey, great speech! You never told me about the language mix up!” They both tried swimming though the crowd to get a better view. “Why didn't you mention it before? It was so funny!”
“I was saving it for the right time,” Hannah replied with a giggle and warmhearted smile for her friend. “If I told you everything while it happened, I wouldn't have any stories to tell you when I got back, and I know you love those.”
“Heh, yeah, those stories are awesome. Maybe you could tell me sooner next time?” Shelby winked and they both laughed. They broke through the crowd and gazed upon the stone ring and artifacts from the other side of a velvet rope. “Anyway, what was with that weird word you used when you were saying the name of the exhibit? I thought it was called the Mysteries of the Ancient Egyptians exhibit.”
Hannah turned and gave her a questioning look. “It is. What are you talking about?”
“You said something else... what was it? Oh, yeah, you called it the Mysteries of the Ancient Aegyptus.”
“No I didn't.”
“Yeah, you did.”
Hannah thought back for a second, trying to remember her exact words to prove her friend wrong. But she suddenly realized that she couldn't remember anything about that particular moment, it was like her brain had derped out for a moment right before she pulled the rope. “Uh, I guess I just cracked under the pressure. You know how I am with speeches.”
“Yes, I know, yet you never fail at delivering them. Maybe you're losing your touch? Sure hope not, your speeches are amazing.” Shelby turned toward the exhibit and stared in awe. “And your work is even more amazing. You're gonna win an award for this for sure.”
“Meh, sounds good to me!” Hannah shrugged. The two of them laughed and followed the majority of the crowd over to the mingling area, where the other archaeologists were waving at them from.
Another month later
Shelby sat at the table in the trendy restaurant, tapping on her phone. She had waited long enough; it was time to give Hannah a call.
The phone rang once, then twice. Finally, Hannah picked up. “Hey, where are you?” Shelby asked, irritated. “I've been waiting at La Nourriture for two hours! Did you get gum in your hair or something? Where are you?”
“Oh, um, I got distracted. I had this idea to build something and I just couldn't wait-”
“You've been reconstructing things in your house ever since the exhibition! What's gotten into you?”
“I don't know! I'll just be doing my normal routine then something will pop into my caput-”
“There you go again using those weird words! What language is that, anyway? I'm coming over!”
“No, wait-”
Shelby hung up and walked out of the restaurant in a huff.
When Shelby arrived at Hannah's house, it looked a lot different than it had just days before. Wires hung from the hanging plants on her porch, and her lawn looked like a redneck lived in the house rather than a normally studios gardener, with appliances all over the lawn, disassembled. Shelby eyed them suspiciously, and headed inside.
The inside wasn't much different- it looked like a house from the TV show about people who collected way too much stuff. Several times Shelby tripped over empty computer casings or random washing machine parts as she made her way to Hannah's study, where she usually could be found, working away on her research.
Shelby did indeed find Hannah there, but when she opened her mouth to say something, Hannah darted across the room and put a finger to Shelby's lips with a “SSSH!”
Hannah darted back and grabbed the soldering iron from her desk, and, holding her breath, soldered a transistor to the exterior of the mass of electronics.
“Hannah, what the fresh hell is this?!” Shelby scolded, “Your house is a mess! Where are your research notes?!”
“Over there, in that catalogue. They were cluttering up my opus ipsum.” She gestured to a computer tower full of all kinds of electronics, with a screen attached to it. “Here, help me carry this out.”
Despite her inner voice telling her not to help her friend, Shelby walked across the room and picked up the gigantic pile of electronics that Hannah had been working on while Hannah herself took the other side.
They somehow made it through the jungle of hanging wires and circuitry to Hannah's backyard, where a 30-foot tall structure towered over all the nearby single-level houses. Shelby ignored it and after they set down the six-foot tall component in a niche on the tower, she continued with her speech.
“Hannah, I’m worried about you. You’ve become so antisocial since the exhibition that I was afraid you had forgotten how to talk to other people. Is this how you’ve been spending your time, building gigantic contraptions for no reason?”
“It’s not for no reason. Stand back.” Hannah began typing on a keyboard mounted on the side of the machine as Shelby, a bit intimidated to the thought of what the giant machine could do, moved to the porch, wondering why she didn’t stop her friend from probably blowing them both to bits.
Suddenly, with a loud hum, the machine sprang to life, lights glowing on all kinds of panels. Its giant wedding-cake shape began to shutter and the top opened up- and with the sound of a sonic boom, a beam of brilliant rainbow light shot from the top of the tower and into the atmosphere.

Re: story thread
The sun gazed down on the now-widening glade, casting an unmistakable light that made the color on the grass, trees and wildflowers amplify. Cicadas buzzed, birds chirped and the nearby river flowed noisily, carelessly splashing water as it flowed by. From a bird's eye view, the forest which surrounded it seemed to flow between being thick and thin; in one spot, you could see straight down to the bottom, with spots of light dancing around on the floor of the earth as the leaves of the trees above waved with the winds. At another, you could see nothing but the green treetops blocking off any outsiders. The spring had just given way to summer, and the earth felt very full.
The glade was dotted with wildflowers and on the edges of where forest both began and fell out were bushes covered with berries. Near the south edge of the glade lay a modest, empty building, with its back pointing towards the opening of the clearing. From the front of the building, and spanning on outwards, was a stone walkway. A massive gate-like structure stood near where the walkway began, its two massive, redwood poles standing out at the left and right sides. The clearing ended here, and the earth dropped at almost a ninety degree angle, down a suicidal distance that was complimented by a set of stone stairs, directly in-line with the walkway and the building which the stone path almost seemed to have rolled out of. The stairs went on a sickening distance, which was not aided by the massive height of the cliff; looking down from the very top, a haze obfuscated the ground, only revealing the tops of what looked to be very old and very tall trees.
