xv is fucking old its last update was published before PNG ever even came to exist

it probably opens 50x50 .bmp and .gif files on old 100mhz SPARC computers with like 4MBs of RAM and a megabyte of disk space like a pro but opening my thousands of pixels huge pngs and jpgs causes it to shit blood

ive seen it a lot in the last 30 minutes because this bitch crashes catastrophically if you don't give it a 10 second breather between opening images

xv was to viewing images as steam™ is to digital video game distribution

there are alternatives but nobody fucking cared/cares about them (in this case, xviewimage. xviewimage was unpopular because it took too long to type and there was no tab completion back then)
