Google, IBM (NYSE: IBM), Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan today announced plans to form the OpenPOWER Consortium – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture. The Consortium intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers.

this is going to fucking destroy intel and take a huge chunk out of AMD

if we start seeing POWER on consumer-tier electronics the entire intel board of directors is going to perform ritual suicide to protect their honor because it'll be all over for x86 and itanium shit

it doesn't even matter that windoz doesn't support it because PPC is widely supported on linux (and ubuntu is predicted to be in 10% of shipped PCs by 2014) and i think OS X still has some compatibility and when consumers get a taste of modern POWER they're not going to be using anything else

so it'll probably take out microsoft too since they blow chunks at adapting and if PPC gets big it's going to get big fast

it's going to monopolize the server market and if it does then it'll probably find its way into consumer electronics and expect it to boom then

POWER Is fucking FAST if i had a netbook with the exact same specs as my current one with a processor with the same clock speeds but with POWER arch it would be able to use KDE smoothly and i could probably play a variety of "resource intensive" games on it without any problems

NVIDIA is alright they're kind of like HP, a good company but they're well known for dumb shit (in HP's case, shitty prebuilt laptops sold at staples and nvidia for their xxgamerxx)

it would probably act funny and lag because WINE is buggy to a comedic level

i'd imagine if POWER got big eve would immediately be ported, because POWER is known for being easy to develop for and i'm pretty sure compiling for another architecture is as easy as compiling it on that architecture (to my knowledge)

it's not like POWER is INFINITE SPEED but it's a fuck of a lot better than x86 and x86-64 alike

isn't x86 like 40 or 50 years old

the whole reason it's still used is compatibility with software made that long ago (and because da corpurations shove it down everyone's throat)

x86 is a fine architecture it's just that it like anything else reaches its peaks at some point

also keep in mind all power software up until this point has mostly been made by ibm versus x86 software being made and with coding practices defined by shitty developers trying to make their spaghetti code run fast

also all software for powerpc can run on POWER

there's a shitload of ppc distros and also apple luvs it so i'm not too concerned about compatability, the only minor issue is no wangblows because microsoft loves intel cock and intel loves their x86
