LOL Gen 4 was so not "soulless". It was probably the least likely candidate out of the series for that title.

Also Gen 5/6 are pretty terrible. Gen five didn't really have much because GF went retard mode and removed the improvements made over the last 4 gens and it also had really stupid gimmicks like the Dream World. Gen six is even worse, hurrp its in three Dee! Gamebreaking ~~mega evolutions ~~, guise! Not to mention stupid uninspired designs (keys? really?). GF is totally out of ideas.

Gen 2/3/4 were bread and butter, features and improvements that actually mattered instead of just appealing to kiddos, without getting in the way of the core game. Gen 1 was good but there was too little to enjoy it as much as its 3 successors.

OK improvements lets see:

gen 2: steel/dark type to nerf psychic type which was crazy OP in gen 1, fairy type should have never happened (dragon type had an edge but it was nothing in comparison to psychic in gen 1), day/night, shinies, hold items, battle tower, the special split, etc.
gen 3: pokemon contests (granted this got fucked up in gen 4 but it was still a bitching thing to include), battle frontier, national pokedex, running, natures, IVs, etc.
gen 4: wifi play, GTS, poketch, a fuck-ton of other stuff (the underground)

gen 5: a bunch of this shit gets removed crippling the game, HORP DREAM WORLD LOL GOOD IDEA AMIRITE GUISE
gen 6: MEGA EVOLUSHUNZ, extra nonsense bullshit to appeal to little kids

and mega evolutions are retarded lol it makes your pokemon uber tier for no reason. it's a fucking joke it's like GF started implimenting ideas 6 year olds send them because they cant think of anything left
