it had to be both the genesis + add ons and snes by far
the add ons for the genesis to me are definitely a bit unappreciated, the 32x could do some really cool stuff (along with some sega cd features) and the sega cd did add the super nintendo features (mode 7, sprite rotation and scaling) along with a fairly powerful cpu compared to it and it all could have had potential if not for the third party games being mostly shit. but stock genesis library is quite amazing in itself
the snes too was also excellent, sharing the game qualities on the genesis also, though it doesn't have blast processing!!!!!
also they represented the world war of consoles

it was more or less the fact it's disc format the GD-ROM was about 1/4 of the max size of a DVD and about 1/2 the max size of a gamecube disc, basically preventing ports of ps2/gcn/xbox games from being properly done for the future
if not for the poor choice for the discs the console could have had a longer run

you can blame the lack of DVDs on the fact that there's a fucking community to regulate people that use it; which requires a rather expensive licensing fee per unit
the hardware itself was very powerful and it had a fucking modem built into it
