A developer at Valve had been inundated with complaints that certain clans and certain players were scoring all the points on TF2, making it harder for n00bs to get started and get good, and posing uncomfortable difficulties on people who don't have time to practice playing all day and just want to achieve a high score.
"Fine, fine," the developer said. "You'll have your wish, I'll make sure everyone is able to feel like a total bad-ass high scores for all!"
The developer then set to work and after weeks of toil released patch 1.917.
The gamers loved it. Now with all kills and flag captures, points were distributed evenly across the team. In-game purchases that teammates made and achievements they earned would be automatically shared by all, and there were even plans in the works for equal sharing of ammo as well.
Then, odd things started happening. People would sign in to servers, walk away from their computers, come back and say "SWEET, 50 NEW ACHIEVEMENTS," sign out and then boast on forums and in-game chats in other servers. There was an incident where a player logged into a server with 24 people, selected a scout, bunny hopped all over the place bored to tears everyone else was at a COMPLETE STANDSTILL.
The gaming community, fed up with the forum boasting and point leaching doxxed the developer, finding her address but unable to find her name. She could hear the angry gamers approaching, pitchforks in hand, and sent one of her servants to answer to the mob.
"Only one of you may enter to discuss any complaints with patch 1.917!" the servant yelled at the crowd.
After the murmuring crowd decided on who would represent the entire gaming community, a tall, square-jawed, athletically built man with deep, blue eyes and wild, orange hair came forward.
"Very well then," the servant said before letting him in.
Ready to settle this issue by force, he rolled up his sleeves, pushed the servant out of the way, and entered a dimly lit room with an Art Deco era couch and other furniture and designs that looked like it was pulled from some futuristic vision someone had in the 1950's.
Before he could speak, he saw the silhouette of a woman smoking a cigarette out of an elongated pipe and wearing a beret. As soon as he saw a pack of cigs with a dollar sign mark on a nearby table, he knew now exactly who it was, how he should act, and what he should say.
The silhouette spoke in a Russian accent, "Has the gaming community learned its lesson?"
"Yes," he answered.
"Then patch 1.917 is no more. Go return to your gaming, and know from this point on that you are to live for no man, nor are you to ask any other man to live for you. Understood?"
"Yes, Ms. Rand. Thank you."
And the weaker members of the TF2 community eventually learned to bootstrap their way to the top by their own efforts, not by mooching from others.
